Buffalo Bus Yellowstone Tour

A few years ago, Yellowstone National Park closed it's winter gates to public snowmobiles, and now only allows guided tours through the park in the winter months. You can still snowmobile, but it has to be with a guide, and you must have BAT machines (Best Available Technology.) Fortunately their new policy also allows for snow coaches, just in case you want to go into the park, but don't want to actually snowmobile.

Our cabin, Forest Haven is available to rent all year round, and we have had people ask us if taking the snow coach into Yellowstone is a good idea, but we have never done it before, so didn't know what to tell them. We decided to spend Christmas this year at the cabin, and tried the snow coaches out. We chose the Buffalo Bus Company, mainly because they had an opening on the date we wanted to go (December 24) and we were lucky to have gotten a seat. I didn't realize how popular the tours are, and during Christmas break, they were packed full. So, if you decide to go during that time, I would suggest making your reservations early. We paid $114 +tax per person for the 8:00 to 4:00  tour to Old Faithful. We also would have needed to pay an extra $12 per person for the park entry fee, but we have an annual park pass, so were able to use that instead.

We arrived at 8:00 a.m. ish. It took us longer to drive from Island Park on snow packed scary roads than I allotted, so we were a little late. When we arrived, the office was FULL of people. Some, like us, were looking for their designated snow coach driver. Others were looking for their snowmobile guide, and getting suited up in snow gear for their day. Finally, we found our driver, Andy, and the number 8 snowcoach, loaded up and headed out.

We began our tour of the park by driving along the Madison River to the Madison campground area. During this section of the tour, we were able to see some snow covered Bison. Their dense coat is so insulating, that their body heat does not radiate away from them enough to melt the snow that falls onto them.  If a snowflake landed on a human, it would melt straight away, but not on a bison. Our Guide Andy says the bison are pretty comfy until about -40*. When it gets colder than that, they will huddle together for warmth. Until then, they are pretty content despite the cold temperatures.

We saw some lovely trumpeter swans in the Madison River. Guide Andy says the river stays at a fairly constant 50* because of the geothermally warmed water that flows into it.

We also saw a lovely bald eagle in a tree. Actually, during the duration of the trip, we were able to see even more bald eagles.

We made stops at the Lower Geyser Basin, Biscuit Basin, and finally made it to Old Faithful Geyser.

We had lunch at Old Faithful then headed back to West Yellowstone, stopping to see a chillin' coyote, another  pair of coyotes, some elk, more eagles, more bison, and a blue heron.

We also stopped at Fire Hole Falls.

So, what is our final recommendation?  We liked it well enough to do it again. We would probably go at a a different time than Christmas break, because even though it wasn't crowded like in the summer time, there were still a lot of people. We recommend dressing warmly, because even though you are riding in a heated bus, it was still pretty chilly. This was especially apparent after walking in the steam of a hot pot. The steam felt great, but made our skin moist like a sauna. Then, when we walked away, the cold air hit our wet skin and froze, causing a fairly painful chill.

These (of course) are only a few of the over 200 photos I took of our experience. If you would like to see the rest of the photos you will find them on my flickr page:

Jan Brett

Last week, JB and I had a great opportunity to listen to the children's author Jan Brett talk about her new book, The Turnip. She described how her inspiration came from a trip to Russia with her husband, where she learned about a Russian tongue twister involving a turnip that wouldn't come out of the ground.  She then talked us through her drawing of the Girl Badger. and even stayed for a book signing. for more photos, please click here: https://flic.kr/s/aHskrjX9rR

Yin and Yang

Yin and Yang.
The good and the bad that must co-exist to bring balance to the universe. Some days, you get both in one swoop of the hammer.
Like that one day, when someone you know launches their new book for sale on Amazon....

http://www.amazon.com/Richer-Than-Royalty-Season-Burch-ebook/dp/B017NC93M8/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1448310866&sr=1-1&keywords=Richer+than+Royalty

....and someone else you know is arrested for murder.

It's all about balance, I guess. I can honestly say both of these people, and their families are in my prayers. I truly hope things are going to work out for them all.

Changes

Saturday, November 14, 2015 I attended memorial services for my Uncle Burke. It has been hard to say goodbye to him. Not because I was super close to him, because I wasn't. But yet, I was. He was a rare individual that I could feel my soul trusted. This is so difficult to explain, because sometimes he could be pretty gruff and I would remember to be intimidated by him. But I always new if I was ever to need anything, I would be able to ask him and I knew he would help me out.

He chose to be cremated, so instead of the regular type of pall bearers carrying his casket, friends and family carried in some of his items, like wood, his dutch ovens, hard hat, plumbing wrench, fishing equipment, etc. Items that made him who he was, like the coins he would always have in his pocket to hand out to the grand kids.

When we were last in Moab, I gave him a friendship bracelet I had made while we were camping. I tied it onto his scooter basket. He looked at it closely, kissed me in thanks, and then said "Make damn sure they bury me with it." That trip was the last time I saw him. He and I both knew it would be. I'm glad I had the chance to tell him I loved him before we parted.
I don't know if the original bracelet made it into his box, so I brought another one with me, just to be damn sure.

For some reason, his passing has marked a changing of the seasons for me. Every time I went to Moab, he was there. And now he's not. I still have plenty of family there, Aunts, lots of cousins, etc. but right now it doesn't feel the same.

Halloween dance. NOT.

Saturday, October 24, was the InTech Halloween dance. JB's foot is so swollen and sore she can barely walk on it, so there will be no dancing for her. Instead, she planned a pumpkin carving get together with a few non dancing friends. And Alicia, too.

More pictures here:

Atlantis

JB doesn't drive. She does however, love to travel. Bill wanted to get her something special for her 16th birthday, and since she didn't want (or need) a car, she asked for a trip to the resort ATLANTIS in the Bahamas.

Bill travels. He travels A LOT. We didn't know it before we arrived, but the Atlantis Resort is actually a Marriott property. So, when Bill went to check in, there was a long line of people waiting for their rooms to be ready. When they saw he was one of their loyal customers, they gave us the VIP treatment. Instead of checking in at the regular lobby, they took us to a fancy office where there was no waiting in line. They upgraded our room, gave us coupons for free water bottles for each day we would be there, as well as discounts on dining and shopping. Then, instead of just telling us where our room was, our hotel clerk WALKED us to our door, and made sure we were satisfied with our accommodations.

View from our room day...

...and night

The Atlantis heavily advertises their many water slides, and the BIG one is called Leap of Faith. it is a 60 ft vertical drop through a tube that goes through a shark tank. On our first day, we took a good look at it, but choose to ride the other water slides/tube rides  instead.

The morning of our second day, we ate breakfast next to a shark pool, then participated in a sea lion experience. They really are just silly water dogs.

We had lunch, then decided to take our leap of faith....

YES. We ALL did it. Bill went first, but when he got nervous, I started to freak out a little. JB just jumped in, had no trouble whatsoever. Me, I went last. Terrified. The young man running the ride told me (while I was standing there shaking) to hold my breath while he counted to 10. I did it. Then he said (cue HEAVY Jamaican accent)
"See mon, you ha' no problem. Dis ride only 8 seconds long. Off wid you now." And I went.

Bill and JB did it again. I did not. But I probably would if we ever go back. Maybe.

Atlantis also has a lot of aquariums and sea life to look at.

We really did have a great time.

But then...

On the last day, toward the evening, we decided to make one more run when JB got upended in the lazy river, which really wasn't that lazy. We were in a fast moving rapid section, and her tube flipped, knocking her upside down into the water. She didn't come up right away, so Bill jumped in to grab her. I thought he lifted her out, but they both say that she made it over to the side wall before he actually got to her. She didn't hit her head, but somehow managed to sand off a large portion of her hair. She also sanded both feet, her knees, wrists, and portions of her hands. We got her to the first aid station and they basically just gave her some band aids and told her to stay out of the water. Since our return, her right foot has developed a few complications We have seen the doctor twice, and now she is on antibiotics and it is finally showing some signs of improvement.

Leaving scars, and making memories.

SLC Comic Con 2015

This year, for SLC COMIC CON JB and Bill wanted to play with Steampunk style outfits. So, I learned to do a few sewing tricks that I had never tried before. JB  wanted to be a steampunked black widow and had me make her a corset, with little shrug jacket, and a skirt that was short in front, and long in the back, with pickups on the bustle. It was a challenge, but I think I did alright with it. Bill went as one of her Hydra minions.

As usual, there was a lot to see and do.

We heard Sean Astin talk about his acting in LOTR and Rudy

We watched this car get painted as the con progressed.

The highlight was our photo ops with both Sean Astin and James and Oliver Phelps.
It was a great time.

Tron Birthday Party

First of all, I must apologize to all 3 of you that regularly read this blog. Shawndra brought it to my attention this week, that no, she hasn't seen the photos from JB's birthday party, or comicon, or our last vacation..... You get the idea. I haven't posted here for awhile. Hopefully today I can play a little bit of catch-up, starting with a Tron Birthday party.

JB decided she wanted to go with TRON as a birthday party theme this year. The big 1.6. Her plan was to have a few friends over and watch the movie on the lawn. Decorations would consist of  a lot of glowing things.

She made multicolored cupcakes. Yum!

On the big night, her second most favorite male (Dad's still first, right?) brought her a lovely bouquet of flowers. I hate to say the word "boyfriend" because there is NO WAY my 16 year old kid could be old enough for a boyfriend...but, I actually like this kid, and he does smart stuff like bringing her flowers on her birthday and helping her with chemistry homework, and helping me set up the big movie screen in the hot sun.... sigh. I digress.

We set up the movie screen, and the kids played frisbee,

And put flashing blinkie lights in their hair,

and took pictures with the photobooth,

and had snacks while we waited for it to get dark enough to watch the movie.

JB showed everyone how to make her super fun fizzy cotton candy drink.

And finally it got dark enough for us to watch TRON on the big screen.

After the movie, while we were waiting for parents to come get their chitlen's, one of her friends picked up the mic to the disco/karaoke ball and began serenading her with various renditions of  "Journey"songs.  He wasn't too bad, for on the spot singing.

On her ACTUAL birth date, we kept it low key, and went out for sushi.

Happy 16, JB.
